Carnevale
February 4th-21st, 2012
Venetian Carnival is undoubtfully the most popular Italian festival known all over the world. The competitions for the best mask and costume, the dances, rowing, food, all of these celebrations just to forget that the Lent is coming with saddness and suffering.

In Venetian language the title of the event means – “Up and down the bridges”. In this non-competitive run the attendands can follow the interesting path therough the city with calli (streets), campi (squares) and ponti (bridges).
San Marco (St. Mark day)

While the whole Italy celebrates its Liberation Day, Venetians do it with doubled stamina.
The same day ( april 25th) is the day of patron saint of Venice, St Mark the Evangelist, whose relics are preserved in the city.

The Palio of the Ancient Maritime Republics

Regata (Palio) delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare is an event developed after the World War II to commemorate the power of four Medieval republics, that once ruled the Mediterranean waters. The Palio is a competition between representatives of four cities : Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice, and each year is played in different city.

The Feast of Redeemer is particularly popular in Venice, not only because its sacral dimension,but also due to firerworks and a spectacular temporary wooden bridge connecting
Zattere with Giudecca, where is the votive church founded after the city recoved from mortal plague in 16th century.

Regata Storica di Venezia 2012

For Venetian gondoliers the Regata is an opportunity to test their strenght and rowing skills.
For the spectators there is an opportunity to see the historical boats and old sailor’s clothes and to test ‘frutti di mare’ in a local restaurant.
The Feast of the Madonna della Salute

When in 1629 another horrible plague came to Venice, after unsuccessful prayersthe citizens remembered the former solution of building the church to Jesus the Redeemer that stopped the spreading of desease. This time the new church was dedicated to the Holy Virgin ( Madonna della Salute). Another feast very popular among both Venetians and visitors.
