Wine tasting in a historical palace in Lecce

In : Tours & Trips

An exciting tour of interiors of recently renovated Palazzo Tamborino with a welcoming drink in its secret garden full of roses, oranges and other wild flowers.
The palace has been built at the beginning of 16th century as a residence of Giudici family, later Capece, then Paladino and finally Tamborino family, from which it takes its present name. Each family added some restoration and changes to the building, that today features a Neo-Gothic facade and one of the most beautiful inner gardens in Puglia.
The ancient gate leads to the rose garden with bamboo, climbing plants and a small orange grove. The garden surrounds two-thirds of the building and goes into the inner side.
This idyllic residence hides within the walls a tragic romance story from the time, when the palazzo was in the hands of Fulvio di Costanzo, Prince of Colle d’Anchises. On one day of summer 1636 while wandering around the palace he found his wife, Beatrice Moccia, wearing only a shirt. Presuming a betrayal, with eyes covered with mist of jealousy Fulvio killed his unfaithfull wife with a single blow of the knife under the breast. The poor woman was buried in the family chapel inside of Church of San Francesco della Scarpa. Soon it appeared that Beatrice was innocent, and her husband ended at the galleys. It is said that even today the night of July 26th you can hear the woman’s cries.
This and other stories you will hear during the guided tour inside of Palazzo Tamborino.
After visiting the private apartments you will be taken into the garden ( orthe old stables ) to try the local products and wines.
the second part is the walking tour, during which you will be able to see at least 4 workshops, among them are a goldsmith’s studio with original creations in gold and precious stones, a tailor, a local stone carver, an antiquarian, a bookshop or a boutique.
