This tour starts in Syracuse, but you may choose the option to be picked up from a hotel in any town in Sicily.
The private driver takes you to the centre of Siracusa, from where the professional guide will take you to the Archaeological Park in the ancient district called Neapolis. You will see there the most spectacular spot in Siracuse, the Greek Theatre from 5th century BC, that once accommodated over 15 000 of spectators, remains of Roman amphitheatre. The hill with Etna in background overlooks the famous quarries Latomia del Paradiso 20-30 m high cave of limestone with spectacular rock formations, one of them is the famous Orecchio di Dioniso , the ear like hole, according to the legend used by tyrant Dionysius to listen to the talks of prisoners placed in the quarries.
Later you will see the oldest part of the town and the traces of first settlements on the island Ortigia.
Located on Piazza Doumo the fountain Fonte Arethusa is linked with the story of Greek nymph Arethusa who has been changed into the spring by goddess Arthemis to be protected from river-god Artheus.
The Duomo ( cathedral ) hides almost whole history of Sicily. The remains of Greek temple ( still visible Doric columns ) were preserved in the form of early Christian church, which later has been extended with Norman walls and facade. The medieval building has collapsed during the Etna’s eruption in 1693 and received the present Baroque facade.
The guided tour ends in one of cafes on the Cathedral Square with tasting of of delicious Sicilian sweets made from honey and Avola’s almonds matched with the local Moscato di Siracusa wine.
The afternoon is free for further exploration of historical monuments of Ortygia,food tasting in local restaurant, or visiting numerous boutique shops.
