The fortress of Angera, ancient Roman fortification located in a strategic position on the Lake Maggiore became the archbishop’s property in 11th century. In 16th century passed under Visconti dominion and in 1449 became the property of Borromeo Princes.

At present this spectacular construction shows different styles as a consequence of constant rebuildings and additions. At first floor of ‘Ala Viscontea’ there is a Gothic great hall with the famous frescos’ cycle painted in the 14th century, which describes spectacular deeds of archbishop Ottone Visconti, including the representation of victory over Della Torre family, that brought the power to Visconti in 1277.
Since 1988 the castle hosts the Doll Museum ( Museo della Bambola ), which is at present one of the most important in Europe due to a large number, variety and quality of exposed items. In addition the castle accomodates unique in Italy the Museum of Children Clothes,
that leads to the discovery of curiosities and refinments of children’s fashion over the centuries. Worth mention is the collection of Roberta della Seta Somni Picenardi, made by little masterpieces of models of miniature furniture manufactured between 18th and 20th centuries.
