For the centuries this picturesque place has been accessible only from the water side, or the narrow path through the mountains.
In 1932 Gardesana road has finally connected Limone, Gargnano and Riva, giving the boost to the tourism development of the area.
Soon the small fishing village became one of the most popular summer holiday resort around Lake Garda.
The distinctive feature of the town are world-famous lemon-houses, with their high walls to protect the trees from the cold northeastern winds.
Some two hundred years ago these houses impressed Wolfgang Goethe, who dedicated the special poem to the ‘land where the citrus blossoms’.
According to a local legend Limone was a son of god Benaco and water nymph . Instead of being a farmer, as his father suggested Limone went to hunt on the slopes of Monte Baldo, where he was killed by a wild boar. After the god brought him back to life, he obeyed the fathers will and settled on the lakeshore growing the fruits that were named after him.
Most probably the name of the town derives from the Latin word “Limen”, which means border, and citrus fruit was brought by Arab sailors to Europe around 11th century.
This does not disturb the local business, known for growing oranges, limes and lemons.
The area is perfect for hiking, mountain walking and biking. The features of Lago di Garda need no recommendation, and the town organizes plenty of summer art events, rock concerts or fireworks to keep the tourists entertained for the whole vacation season.
