Castello di Vezio

In : Lombardy  Guides:

The Castle of Vezio was built in the 11th century on the hill over the small village with stone houses sheltering some fifty inhabitants.

Over two thousand years ago near the site of present Vezio was Celtic, or probably even Etruscan settlement.
Romans build the road of Val Varrone called “the Iron way”, because it was used to transport steel and iron products made in surrounding area.
The territory change the owners quite often,it was in the hands of Lombards, local bishops, French and Spanish rulers, and so the castle.
In 17th century the castle was the property of Tarelli family, in following centuries of Monti and finally Serbelloni families.
The building has been changed and adjusted several times. At present the Castle seems a kind of fortification with a square base, high walls and a central tower which can be reached through a raising bridge, still working. The effort connected with taking the path to the castle encircled by a vast olive grove is rewarded with great panoramic views of Lake Como area.
The Castle of Vezio features falconry with barn owls, owls, buzzards, hawks and other birds of prey. The Falconer shows the birds in flight, or at the feeding time, not on regular hours.
The dungeons, opened to visitors in the spring of 1999, was an outpost of Cadorna Defensive Line (1915-1918), which should have opposed a possible bid of German attack from the basin of Menaggio.
