Grumello’s Castle overlooks the homonymous village ( Grumello del Monte ) with surrounding vineyards located in the heart of Valcalepio between the city of Bergamo and the Lake Iseo.
The castle has been built before 1200 as a military fortress with tower protecting the surrounding area. For its strategis location the Castle was the theatre of strong fights, at first between the Guelphs and Gibellines, then between the Milan’s Dukedom and the Republic of Venice.
It was owned by famous figures such as Cardinal Guglielmo Longo and Bartolomeo Colleoni.
In 1700 Counts suardi transformed it into a noble house, which was later passed to Marquis Del Carretto and to Gonzaga Vescovado family.
To the present times left are the tower with the Guelph crenelation, the guard hall, the jails and the large cellars used at present for quality wine storage.
The wine production the castle ownes to its present owners, Reschigna Kettlitz family from Milan, who aquired it in 1953. Some localsamples can be tasted and bought at the endof the tour.
