Originally a monastery, abandoned by the monks in 16th century, in late 19th century has been rebuilt by Baron Baratta into his summer residence, to be later sold to Ruggiero Valentini,
who in 1905 opened here Grand Hotel Splendid. Soon it became the place recognised by European aristocracy, and shortly after the Second World War, the frequent accommodation of Hollywood actors brought the Hotel an international fame.
In 1985 Orient-Express Hotels bought the Hotel , refurbished and redesigned rooms, and in 1997 after acquiring the property opened the next building in the heart of Portofino – Splendido Mare.

hotel Splendido is situated around 37 km from Genova airport Cristoforo Columbo (GOA) on the hill overlooking Protofino and Tigullian bay.
There are trains rom Rome and Florence to Rapallo and Santa Margherita train station, which is about 5 km from the hotel.
The motorway A12 between Genova and La Spezia has the exit to Rapallo, and then local road to Portofino via Santa Margherita.
