Every year more than two thousand sails meet in the Gulf of Trieste to compete in Europe’s
biggest sailing event Barcolana. All of the yachts start from the single line to conquer 16 nautical miles in the shortest time possible.
Barcolana 2009
The race is set near the border with Slovenia, and since the beginning of 1990′s the course enters also the Slovenian waters adding to Barcolana additional international dimensions. The joint enterprise of several Triest yacht clubs started the first edition in 1969 with 51 competing boats.
Since the beginning the sailors were form different countries, and so the winners – Italy had to wait for its first victory till 1980 (yaht Monaco of Bavaria ). Also within the last years Italian sailors take the first prizes, shared only with a top Slovenian helmsman – Mitja Kosmina, who is the winner of Barcolana 2009, after scoring the line of second places.
Traditionally the sail race takes place on second Sunday of October which this year carries a magic number 10.
Thus this year edition of Barcolana will be held on 10.10.10.
