For centuries the music and the art are an essence of Venice. Almost every building hides a work of an ancient master, and so the music is performed not in modern concert halls, but inside of churches, palaces , theatres and other historical buildings.
In medieval times popular were religious confraternities that gathered members of all levels of society. Their splendid residences, with walls and ceilings covered with masterpieces make today a perfect ambient for perceiving concerts of classical music. Scuola Grande dei Carmini featuring the work of Gian Battista Tiepolo, or Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Battista also with Tiepolo and Tintoretto may compete with splendour against palaces like the one of Barbarigio-Minotto. Palazzo delle Prigioni adjacent to Palazzo Ducale once witnessed another kind of music, scream and sights of prisoners located in the cells underneath. One of the famous fugitives was Casanova.
Classical music sounds perfectly inside of the churches like one of the oldest in Venice – Chiesa di Santa Maria Formosa.
