Riva del Garda is located in nothernmost part of Lake Garda. In Medieval Ages it controlled the trade route encircling the lake towards the Alps. Its strategic position enforced the development of fortifications, remains of them we can still see today.
The 13th century Torre Apponale near Piazza III Novembre, which once protected the town from the lake side is open during summer months for brave ones who want to climb 165 steps to reach the top. You may decide yourself if the panoramic views are enough to award climbing this 34 m high tower, or the views of a plate with fresh lake trout in one of the restaurants on the surface beat all the competitors. Anyway from the bottom it is better to see the weather van atop of the tower, a symbol of Riva del Garda.
The fortress Rocca has 700 years of history full of capturing, recapturing, sieges and demolitions. Today the fortress surrounded by a moat with drawbridge hosts Civic Museum with a small collection of local art and crafts.
The round fortification visible from the lake is 16th century Bastione, with another small museum and panoramic views of the Lake Garda.
If you have more time and will to explore the area you may find in the neibourhood the lakes Tenno and Ledro, and the Varone falls.
The nearby village Arco is a local centre for hiking and climbing.
But the main attraction is the Lake itself. You can rent rowboats and pedal boats near the castle, and a nautic club Sailing Du Lac can provide you with windsurf board.
Windsurfing fans meet at the village Torbole sul Garda.
